One of my fav. anime. 
I love the manga too. This is one of the very few anime in which the true manga essence is not lost. I love Shin*Yankumi pair. Its her dumbness that make me want to read it. But you know what, may be its the forbidden love that runs the show. 
Yamaguchi Kumiko is your regular dorky teacher at Shirokin High - Home room teacher to the very infamous 2-D. But, outside the school, she is the yondaime [forth successor] to one of the very powerful yakuza group - the Ooedo Group. Her original identity is a secret from her school. Her certain activities in school, intrigues a student, Sawada Shin, the only student in the whole school with good brains and looks. Gokusen anime is about her adventures along with her students. The manga continues till this day, exploring the feeling of Shin towards the oblivious Kumiko, nick-named Yankumi by her 'kawaii' students.
The only anime i watch and re-watch and re-watch most of the time. The drama was not as interesting as the anime, well, to me. :(
